A speeding vehicle while fleeing police slammed into a crowded bar early on Saturday, killing 4 individuals and injuring 11 in a historic district of Florida, known for its entertainment scene and tourists.
Aerial patrol unit with the local police department spotted the car driving dangerously on a freeway at about 12.40am after police stated the silver sedan had been observed illegally racing in a different area, as per a law enforcement announcement.
The state highway patrol caught up with the car and tried to execute a maneuver that involves striking a rear fender of a fleeing vehicle to make it to lose control, called a pit, but it was unsuccessful.
State police officers âended pursuitâ as the car raced toward the historic downtown district near downtown, local police said. Ultimately, the motorist lost control of the vehicle and hit over a dozen people near the establishment, officials confirmed.
Three victims perished at the scene and a fourth person died at a medical facility. As of the next day, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in critical state, and eight other victims were being treated at local hospitals but were classified as not critical, police said. Two other victims experienced minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Every one of the 15 people are adults.
âWhat happened this morning was a senseless tragedy, we are with the loved ones of the deceased and everyone who were affected,â the Tampa top law enforcement officer expressed in a message.
Officers identified the suspect as 22-year the individual, who was arrested on Saturday and is being held at the Hillsborough county jail.
Legal records indicated Sampson has been accused with 4 counts of reckless driving causing death and four counts of serious evading arrest with severe harm or death. Each are first-degree crimes. No attorney was listed for Sampson.
âOur entire city is mourning this loss,â remarked Tampaâs mayor, who also served as Tampaâs first female police chief, in a message on online platforms.
âMy thoughts are with the victims and families. Official inquiries into the incident is ongoing, and we are working to get answers,â the statement added.

After a increase in fatalities, a recent report funded by the US justice department called for law enforcement pursuits to be rarely used, noting that the danger to suspects, personnel and onlookers often outweighs the urgent need to apprehend a suspect.
Still, Florida has intensified efforts on the tactics, with the stateâs road police amending its guidelines to relax restrictions on the application of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The justice department-backed analysis described these tactics as âhigh-riskâ and âcontroversialâ.
