Republicans in the state of California filed a legal action in federal court on Wednesday, challenging a high-stakes redistricting initiative that could flip up to five House seats to the benefit of the Democratic party.
The measure, Proposition 50, was approved by the electorate on Tuesday evening, representing a clear win for the Democratic side. The plan grants on a temporary basis the power to draw electoral boundaries to the state's legislative body, enabling it to approve maps that will help the Democratic party gain five seats in the House of Representatives.
The plan is a targeted countermeasure to gerrymandering in Texas, where Republicans, following the US president's direction, have carved out a number of new safe Republican districts.
