LeBron James's Legendary Scoring Run Ends, Yet Lakers Claim Victory Over Toronto.

LeBron James was aware his incredible run of scoring in double figures was threatened. In that crucial moment, however, it was not his focus.

The correct basketball play was to pass the rock – so he did. Following that play, the unprecedented record was over.

James's staggering run of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten concluded during a recent game, as the league's career points king was limited to a mere eight points in the Lakers' close triumph versus the Toronto Raptors. He delivered the decisive pass, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura for a three-pointer as time expired.

“Nothing,” James said in response on the record concluding. “The important thing is we won.”

A Team-First Play Delivers the Game

James could have attempted to win the game – while also extending his record – in the closing seconds, instead, he decided to make the extra pass to Rui stationed in the corner. Hachimura made the shot, prompting James raised his arms with his hands in the air.

“Just playing basketball the proper way. You always make the smart play,” James remarked. That has always been how I operate. That is the way I learned the game. That's what I've done my whole career.”

James is very conscious exactly how many points he has at all times,” said Lakers coach JJ Redick. “He did it as he has done throughout his career.”

The Record's Final Moments

James re-entered the game one last time with 5:23 remaining, the win and the streak on the line. His tally was a mere six points from a 3-for-15 performance at that juncture.

He managed a basket at 1:46 left to tie the game and missed a 14-footer at one minute to go that might have pushed him to double digits.

He passed up one more attempt – though the opportunity was there. Austin Reaves found him in the waning seconds, but James chose to dish it off instead of shooting.

“The basketball gods, when you play it correctly, they will bless you,” the coach concluded.

Reflecting on a Staggering Record

James's streak commenced over eighteen years ago. It was easily the most extended streak of its kind in professional basketball: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem had 787 such games, and Karl Malone was fourth on the list at 575.

LeBron is such an unselfish player,” said teammate a fellow Laker.

He focuses on playing the game of basketball. He had the opportunity but due to the player he is and his character off the court, he executed the pass, passed it to Rui and secured the victory.”

Reaching double digits had typically been an afterthought early in the final period. Throughout his run, he had achieved ten points by the start of the fourth over twelve hundred times coming into the contest.

Yet two such games below ten points through three quarters took place recently: He had nine points entering the final quarter against Dallas on 28 November, then had six going into the fourth against Phoenix earlier in the week.

James managed to preserve the record against the Suns. One game later, it finished – and he celebrated anyway.

“I always just make the correct play. That’s automatic, regardless of outcome,” James said. “You make the smart play, the basketball gods consistently returning the favor.”
