Plans for Putin-Trump Summit Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Announced

There are "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.

Recently the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The White House declined to provide additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with sources suggesting Trump had urged him to give up extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on this week Trump supported a truce plan supported by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the war on the existing battle lines.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented conversations concerning the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump recently preceded speculation that the US was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The talk about the missiles had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he commented.
