Excitement is building for the horror series Welcome to Derry, that's been garnering praise and weaving in references from additional King stories. Just one day after launch, the network declared that episode two will premiere ahead of schedule, scheduled ideally for Halloween.
Kicking off on October 31 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, episode two of the Derry prequel will premiere on HBO's online platform, before its linear broadcast. Future chapters of the series run will continue to air on the weekend on the network and streaming service, leading up to the concluding chapter on the 14th of December.
Taking place within the Derry mythology, the new series is inspired by the classic book while enlarging the setting established by director Andy Muschietti in the recent movie adaptations. The original It focused on young characters battling supernatural evils, thus it's suitable that this show continues that tradition. Yet, the debut of HBO’s Welcome to Derry proves it set out to increase the tension, delivering even more intense scares than Muschietti’s films and setting a harsh vibe for the upcoming episodes.
Set in 1962, the series presents a new generation of adults and children residing in a apparently peaceful community concealing a evil heart. Derry follows a vicious, repeating pattern—one marked by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a terrifying being resurfaces once every three decades. While Welcome to Derry might sound like it skews too close to the cinematic adaptations on the surface, what sets apart the HBO Max series is its two-sided viewpoint—unfolding through the viewpoints of young and old at the same time. Children stay particularly vulnerable to the entity's fear, but grown-ups also face dealing with their own nightmares stemming from local discrimination and hidden paranormal elements.
Episode 2 airs on October 31 at midnight PT.
