The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, was not quick to announce he would live there promptly after his victory in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the importance of directing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability voters elected me on," Mamdani said in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his election campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
